Overview

The Jean Barriol Institute (IJB)

An overview presented by the Director, Prof. Jean-Luc Blin.

The Jean Barriol Insitute (IJB) results from the Federation of four research Laboratories, three UMR (Unité Mixte de Recherche, Joint Research Unit) labs in Nancy and one EA (Equipe d'Accueil) lab in Metz, and it covers the same perimeter as the Molecular Physical Chemistry Center at the University of Lorraine. These two Institutions act in interplay with one another. The Federation was conceived to respond to two major challenges. Firstly, to promote exchanges in the domain of molecular sciences in Lorraine by corroborating existing collaborations, encouraging multidisciplinary projects, stimulating novel ambitious proposals finally leading to regional, national and international activities.

To this aim, the IJB supports different research Axes, originating from the specific knowledge and expertise of the Labs and the groups in the Federation. The second goal is to build a common background for the scientific equipment of the different Labs. Sharing the scientific instruments allows a better maintenance of the existing material, purchasing new equipment and optimising the work of the personnel in charge for their management. Different scientific platforms arise from the specific skills of research groups with long-standing experience, which can be of help for other groups, both in the Academic and in the Industrial domains by means of external partnerships. Presently, the scientific project of the IJB relies on three Thematic Axes that were identified on the basis of strong interdisciplinary interests. The Axes are supported by the Institute through specific actions and by granting priority access to the platforms. The topics of the IJB Thematic Axes are:

  • Molecular and Hybrid Materials (M2H)
  • Microorganisms, Macromolecules and Molecules for Life Sciences (M3V)
  • Electron density and electronic structure, Intermolecular Interactions (R12)
